Stop The “R” Word
The R word is used as a funny statement to call your friends but actually very hurtful and a very strong word. The “R” word is a word that people call less advanced people with mental, physical and social development disabilities. Most kids that have a disability can be physically one age but there mental age could be less than what their age is. In the US there are about 4.6 million people diagnosed with a disability. About 25%-35% of people born with a disability the cause is unknown. The “R” word is a really hurtful and offensive word especially to people with disabilities but can be hurtful to people without. Stop the “R” word. This topic is really important to me because I have a twin sister that has a disability. She has a brain injury or it is known as TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). She has been to school and heard people say this word in the halls, to her other friends with disabilities. She gets offended when people say it in the halls or to her friends because she knows that it is a very hurtful word. We participate in Special Olympics and they promote to Stop the “R” word. Personally I think it worked for our community but some people still say it. Yes, it won’t totally go away but to get the message across that it hurts people hopefully we can impact people and show them that this word is very hurtful. For my photography social change project I took pictures of some of my sisters friends and her. I added wording across the picture saying how the word offends people. This is why I choose Stop the “R” word.
